DMF INITIATIVES

AHA/DMF Go Red North Dakota Women’s Heart Health Initiative

In February 2006, DMF and the American Heart Association launched a DMF-funded $1.25 million three-year initiative to improve the cardiovascular health of women statewide. This initiative is an expansion of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement which provides women with the knowledge and tools they need to take positive action to reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke and protect their overall health. Through this initiative, women are educated on heart disease risk factors, healthcare providers are educated on the unique characteristics of heart disease in women, an intervention study is being conducted and free or reduced-cost health screenings are offered to women across the state.

Progress:

  • A website was developed specifically for the initiative at www.GoRedND.com
  • 4,388 North Dakota women have joined the “Go Red for Women” movement by registering at events or on the website
  • 600 North Dakota women have visited the Go Red Heart Check-up site, an online tool that educates women on heart health and encourages a dialogue with their health provider
  • 19 Go Red for Women community events were held across North Dakota, with over 3,300 women attending
  • In Jan., 2007, a statewide media campaign was launched, including television spots, billboards, posters, bookmarks and postcards
  • 10 worksites were selected to participate in a control/intervention group intervention study including: US Bank Call Center and North Dakota State University (NDSU), Fargo; West Fargo Public Schools, West Fargo; Unison Bank, Jamestown Community Credit Union, Gussner School, Roosevelt School, Jamestown; Workforce Safety and Insurance (WSI), Montana Dakota Utilities/Montana Dakota Utilities Resource, Bismarck and Morton County, Mandan.
  • 680 worksite participants have received heart health screenings, small group education, and/or support from a trained wellness coach. Participants will be re-screened two years post-intervention.
  • Over 1,100 North Dakota physicians and nurse practitioners received a women’s heart health education mailing from Go Red North Dakota.
  • North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND, is performing a formal evaluation of the initiative, including intervention sites and statewide efforts.
