Healthcare Workforce Shortage Initiative

The following grants have been awarded to address healthcare workforce issues:

Increased number of BSN nursing education slots (2004-present)

Tri-College University, Fargo, ND-Moorhead, MN
  • $375,756 over three years (2004 grant)
  • A total of 54 new nursing student slots per year at end of three years through:
    • A new freshman track at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM)
    • LPN to BSN program at North Dakota State University (NDSU)
    • A second degree BSN program at Concordia College (CC) for those with existing degrees
    Progress:
    • A total of 54 new nursing student slots opened per year.
    • By 2014, up to 175 additional new four-year degree nurses will have entered the healthcare workforce.

    Jamestown College, Jamestown, ND
  • $96,000 over three years (2007 grant)
    • A total of 12 new nursing student slots per year

    Access to distance education programs (2001-present)

    Lake Region State College, Devils Lake, ND
  • $168,467 in two grants to implement licensed practical nurse (LPN) distance education programs targeting rural areas of Grafton and Northwood, ND.
    • Current CNAs employed at healthcare facilities in these communities were provided an opportunity to earn their LPN degree via distance education.
    Progress:
    • 9 students passed LPN course at Grafton; all plan to practice in the area.
    • 2 of the above 9 LPNs have been accepted to registered nursing programs.
    • As a result of this project, there was a plan for Minot State to bring their bachelor of science-nursing program to Lake Region State College.
    • 5 students are currently enrolled in the LPN program at Northwood.
    Access to simulation mannequins/simulation equipment (2000-present)
  • Over $292,545 awarded to address decreased access to on-site clinical experiences:

    $109,711 University of North Dakota (UND)
    $ 81,086 Jamestown College (JC)
    $ 64,004 MN State Community & Technical College (MSCTC), Moorhead, MN
    $ 23,000 Northland Comm. & Tech. College, Thief River Falls, MN
    $ 14,744 NDSU

    Progress: Increased access to clinical experiences due to saturation of area clinical sites.

  • CNA training opportunities (2003)

    $9,480 Grand Forks Career & Technical Education – CNA course for high school students
    Outcomes: 83 students completed training. Due to demand, two summer sessions were held with 23 students completing the program. They intend to have a CNA elective course next year due to the tremendous response to these sessions.
    $6,735 Riverview Place, Fargo, ND – CNA course for New Americans
    Outcomes: 6 New Americans passed North Dakota CNA test.
    $5,000 Teamworks, Inc., Park Rapids, MN - CNA course for high school students.
    Outcomes: 9 students from three area high schools became CNAs.

  • Health careers scholarships (2001-present)

    $234,650 BSN nursing scholarships - CC, JC, MSUM, NDSU, UND
    $ 35,000 Health careers scholarships - dental assisting, dental hygienist, LPN – MSCTC
    $ 4,000 Medical student scholarships - UND Medical School: Mack Traynor, MD, Scholarship Fund, Robert G. Rogers, MD, Scholarship Fund
    Outcomes: Approximately 270 scholarships awarded.

  • Statewide Healthcare Workforce Summit (2006)

    $10,000 To bring together nearly 200 stakeholders including policy makers, government agency reps, educators, healthcare administrators, state healthcare organizations and public health reps to begin development of a coordinated statewide plan addressing the healthcare workforce needs of North Dakota.

  • Spot, Support and Secure Primary Care Pilot Project (2007)

    $87,745 To recruit students from predominantly rural and small town backgrounds to the discipline of family medicine (career day presentations, residential camps, externships and physician mentor networks).

  • Don Breen Rural Externship in Family Medicine (1998-2007)

    $77,500 To provide stipends to first year University of North Dakota medical students who participate in a summer externship in rural family medicine.

  • Development of Rural Health Nursing Workforce Strategies for Region

    $35,000 DMF is contracting with UND’s Center for Rural Health to convene the regional educational institutions which produce nurses to develop a long-term strategy to address the nursing shortage.
