Model School Nurse Program Initiative
In 2002, DMF’s board approved a $1.3 million five-year Model School Nurse initiative. The program is in its fifth and final year at three school districts: Cass County Public Schools, Fargo, ND, Grand Forks Public Schools, Grand Forks, ND and the Fargo Catholic Schools Network, Fargo, ND. The goal of the Model School Nurse program is to develop a replicable program that provides school-aged children with improved access to cost-effective, quality healthcare services, both on-site at the school and through referrals to local healthcare providers. This program works hand-in-hand with the Covering Kids and Families Initiative to connect uninsured children to free or low-cost health coverage programs.
Progress:
- All three school systems, recognizing the value of school nursing, have indicated support for sustaining the programs after this fifth and final year of grant funding.
- The North Dakota School Nurse Organization (NDSNO), including representatives from all initiative pilot sites, made significant headway in educating legislators and others as they pursued state funding for school nurse programs across North Dakota. NDSNO utilized data gathered through the initiative’s formal evaluation to educate legislators.
- With the assistance of pilot school nurse coordinators, the North Dakota State Health Department developed a school health guidelines manual that will be distributed to all school buildings in North Dakota in the Fall of 2007. DMF funded printing and distribution of the manual. The manual outlines a wide range of health procedures for issues that arise among school students. The manual will assist schools who are starting school nurse programs and provide guidance for existing programs.
- A five-year formal evaluation of data collected by North Dakota State University will be completed in August 2007.
