In 2008, two local independent healthy living advocacy groups began addressing obesity prevention. The Childhood Obesity Prevention group was spearheaded by Fargo Cass and Clay County Public Health departments, along with MeritCare Health System. The Pioneering Healthier Communities group, led by the YMCA, included several prominent community leaders. At DMF’s recommendation, the two groups merged and became the Cass Clay Healthy People Initiative (CCHPI).
CCHPI is a community-wide active living and healthy eating initiative funded by Dakota Medical Foundation. It serves as an umbrella group to coordinate multiple efforts underway to improve our food and fitness culture and to develop intentional efforts to create new opportunities for healthy change. We are a link between a diverse and far-flung network of people and agencies with a common dream. Our mission is “To facilitate a comprehensive approach to active living and healthy eating in Cass and Clay Counties.” By working at the community level to influence policies, environments and systems, our efforts will be sustainable.
We have strong relationships with both mayors as well as leaders in county governments, staff members of local planning units who make policy recommendations, park districts, school district leaders, public transportation/engineering departments, healthcare providers and agencies that work with low-income families. Goals targeting five U.S. Health and Human Services’ Healthy People 2010 Indicators have been set, using local benchmarks. We will work to integrate evidenced-based practices into government, education, the food industry, worksite wellness, community-based organizations, healthcare and health insurance.
This initiative involves health and community. To be successful, wide-spread involvement will be required. We want to become the Nation’s Most Healthy People by 2020. Help us set the stage for a healthier tomorrow - for our community, our children, and our grandchildren!
