Strategic Planning

To be highly effective, a nonprofit needs to have a plan that outlines its goals and the strategies it will use to achieve and measure those goals. A strategic plan should not be developed and then left to sit on the shelf; it should be utilized consistently to guide the organization and regularly reviewed by the board and staff. A continuous strategic planning and monitoring process is a critical component for building a high impact organization.

Since 2005, the Impact Institute has engaged consultants to help 60 organizations develop strategic plans and over 200 nonprofit staff and board members have attended seminars to learn how to develop strategy and implement plans more effectively.

In 2011, Impact is taking a skill building approach to providing strategic planning assistance to nonprofit organizations. The goal of this approach is to build the core capacity of an organization to internally manage a continual improvement cycle of planning, implementing, evaluating and then modifying and implementing again. Building the core capacity of nonprofits to manage an ongoing planning cycle helps them improve their societal outcomes and lessen their dependence on external consultants.

Impact is partnering with La Piana Consulting to create a Strategic Planning Toolkit and Webinar that will include a step-by-step guide and tools for developing strategy and creating a strategic plan.
